Old Mortality

The Covenanters in arms in 1679, a moderate caught between fanatics on both sides, and the killing time that followed. The book made half of Scotland angry; it is still the best novel about what religious civil war does to reasonable men. This edition binds 48 plates after painters including Thomas Jones Barker, Alessandro Ossani and Francis Montague Holl, alongside 12 restored and coloured illustrations.
