He offered her another margarita, and, as he returned from the bar, he carefully slid the pill into her glass. They were getting along fine, and he was sure she would give him no trouble...
48 hours later
A young man is found dead in a pool of blood. There is no sign of a break-in at his flat. The victim is found wearing a woman's t-shirt, while a bottle of Rohypnol lies on the table nearby.
Detective Elinborg, already struggling to juggle family life and the relentless demands of her job, is assigned the case. But with no immediate leads to the killer, can she piece together details of the victim's secret life and solve a brutal murder?

El nborg, Inspector Erlender's female detective colleague, takes charge of a case in Indridason's subpar seventh Icelandic thriller (after 2009's Hypothermia). When El nborg and her team investigate the murder of Run lfur, an inoffensive young man whose half-dressed, butchered body was found in his Reykjav k flat, they find a date rape drug, Rohypnol, on his person and later, during the autopsy, stuffed down his throat. El nborg's search for answers leads her to the victim's village, where she discovers that old sins can cast long shadows and outrage can induce a person to take extraordinary and uncharacteristic measures. While Indridason provides his usual insights into Icelandic society and culture, lucky breaks mark much of the plodding police work, and the meandering forays into El nborg's personal life the demands of raising three children, the pleasure she takes in cooking may make her more human but don't add much of interest.
