I allowed my mind to wander in a phantasmagorical world of absurdity and contradiction, hence the title: “The Absurd Life of a Shoe”.
Oscar the Shoe, whose life story I invented, is inhabited by a human type from the past that still exists today. He starts as a soft bootie but in time becomes a full-grown shoe or boot.
Why choose the shoe as a subject? Because it serves humankind. It follows its master or mistress everywhere and, like a true friend, never says “Go ahead without me.” It protects them from rough terrain, mud, rain, heat and cold. It will step on and squash creepy-crawly creatures, on purpose or by accident, without complaint. It will not say “oh shoot, I just stepped on
it! ”
It adapts itself to all circumstances. It can be a tennis or a golf shoe, a loafer or a sandal, a riding boot or just a boot. It can even be the military boot that strikes the ground to show the soldier’s manliness, the innocent boot whose sound spreads terror!
The story for a four-year old changes and becomes a story for grownups while keeping a childlike spirit.
