A Look Inside
“Man is a creature that can get accustomed to anything, and I think that is the best definition of him.”
“Bad people are to be found everywhere, but even among the worst there may be something good.”
― Fyodor Dostoevsky, The House of the Dead

About the Book
The House of the Dead, written by Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky, was first released in 1862. A portion of the motivation for this semi-autobiographical philosophical work comes from Dostoevsky's own narratives of living in a labor camp during the mid-1800s. He spent four years in the camp before going into exile for six years. The book's narrator, Aleksandr Petrovich Goryanchikov, murdered his wife and was given a ten-year sentence of hard labor in Siberia. Like Dostoevsky, he had a greater social status than the other prisoners, which led to his isolation and made prison life more difficult. While he is there, he has a spiritual awakening, grows to care about the prisoners, and is moved by their courage and intelligence. The central idea of the book is the narrator's transformation and coming of age, and a large number of the characters are based on persons the author met while she was confined.
