About the Book
Tom Brown's Schooldays, written by Thomas Hughes, was published in 1857. This 1830s English public school novel tells the story of the book's titular character, eleven-year-old Tom Brown, who had to change schools in the middle of the term. A significant amount of the book is based on the author's own experiences since Tom Brown is based on the author's brother. The novel has been several times adapted for film and television, and it served as the inspiration for the genre of literature about British schools, which includes Billy Bunter and St. Trinians.

Author
Author, attorney, judge, and politician Thomas Hughes was well-known for his book Tom Brown's School Days. This semi-autobiographical book is set at Rugby School, where Hughes formerly attended. It includes a little-known sequel called Tom Brown at Oxford. Hughes went to Rugby School between 1834 and 1842. The book does a fantastic job of conveying Hughes' enthusiasm for sports, childish optimism, and admiration for the legendary rugby coach Thomas Arnold. Because of the book's success, the idea of muscular Christianity gained traction and a lasting stereotype of the public school student was established.
