Jonathan Harker, a young London solicitor travels to Transylvania to help a rich nobleman, Count Dracula, purchase an estate in England. Dracula is planning to immigrate to England, and wants Harker to help him hammer out all the legal details. A lacklustre production of a book that deserves better
A mediocre production of a book that deserves better
As a fan of Bram Stoker's Dracula, I found this adaptation rather lacklustre and wanting. I had a few issues with it.
One: one narrator. I've always disliked productions with one voice and while I realise it may not always be feasible, I always find it jarring to have one gender do the speaking voices for the other gender.
Two: the production value. Given the date of publication I can imagine that this was narrated at home rather than in a studio, but certainly that is no excuse for having so many background noises? At one point I heard a child in the background.
Three: While the narrator has a lovely voice with clear enunciation, I feel that she could have done better. There is little emotion in her voices and at times it felt like she was rushing through her lines.
All in all, I do not fault the narrator. Given probable Covid-related constraints, she did her best, but the end-product leaves a bit to be desired.
