"Why, in our affluent society, do so many people live in poverty, without access to health care, working multiple jobs, and are nevertheless unable to make ends meet, with no future prospects, while the planet is burning? In his international bestseller, Kohei Saito argues that while unfettered capitalism is often blamed for inequality and climate change, subsequent calls for “sustainable growth” and a “Green New Deal” are a dangerous compromise. Capitalism creates artificial scarcity by pursuing profit based on the value of products rather than their usefulness and by putting perpetual growth above all else. It is therefore impossible to reverse climate change in a capitalist society; in fact, the system that caused the problem in the first place cannot be an integral part of the solution. Instead, Saito advocates for degrowth and deceleration, which he conceives as the slowing of economic activity through the democratic reform of labor and production. In practical terms, he argues for the following: the end of mass production and mass consumption. decarbonization through shorter working hours. the prioritization of essential labor over corporate profits. By returning to a system of social ownership, he argues, we can restore abundance and focus on those activities that are essential for human life, effectively reversing climate change and saving the planet."

How this booked prevented my from changing my lifestyle
I am a guy working in a capitalistic society. I was interested in this book because I wanted to learn more about the ways I can minimize the negative consequences of my life. But by listening to this audiobook I went from interested to believing the writer assuming a lot of complicated things with very high certainty. And a total lack of respect in which capitalism is good at. This made me feel separated from the group trying to change the world and willing to make sacrifices which is a terrible shame I think.
Capitalism has very big pitfalls like inequality and climate effects. But by distancing yourself from this system idealogically that most of the world is dependant on, how do you expect to work together with people to change it?
Quote from this book “All capitalism has ever done is shift the cost to the pereferies.”
What about the improvements to the society? Like healthcare, food security, able to eat and travel to the other side of the world, world peace relatively to the world before Industrial Revolution. Can we assume another global system could achieve it as well as capitalism has done? What consequences does those systems have? Instead of only negative consequences of capitalism the first 40minutes. Feels very similar to propaganda.
Why not respect capitalism for what is has to offer? and improve. Instead of saying it’s no good in any area.
Maybe this is because the writer wants to make an impression. But in reality he drives me away from something I believe could be a huge inspiration/positive influence on global improvements to the way we live.
Saito. Please read daily laws by Robbert green. I think this will help you a big deal in transforming world system so it suits more people better. I genuinely these insights would make sure I would stick around and if I will maybe millions more who are on the fence of doing something but not now what and how. Thank you for your efforts. Sincerely Rien
