Octave Mirbeau (16 February 1848 – 16 February 1917) was a French art critic, pamphleteer, novelist, and playwright. Europe wide popularity and great success among the public he achieved while working in the field of literary and artistic avant-garde. His work has been translated into over two dozens of languages. His own literary debut he made with Le Calvaire (Calvary, 1886), by which he was able to overcome the traumatic liaison with the ill-reputed Judith Vinmer, renamed Juliette Roux in the novel.

The Diary of a Chambermaid is a decadent novel by Octave Mirbeau. It is written in form of a diary of Mademoiselle Celestine R., a chambermaid. She discovers one odd feature of her employer – he fetishized her boot. One day she finds him dead with her shoe in his mouth. Thus she has to find new employers.
