1. On the subject of impeachment of a witness for the purpose of testing his credibility, the rule is that as to matters collateral to the main issue he cannot be interrogated merely for the purpose of contradicting him. The reason for the rule is that otherwise issues might be multiplied indefinitely, thus causing the jury to lose sight of the real controversy.
