Hawai’i Newspapers

Digitized Newspapers from 1836 - 1922

Beschrijving uitgever

Newspapers have been printed in Hawai‘i since the mid-1800s. Historically, newspapers in Hawai‘i served to spread the news, but were also an instrument of American Protestant missionaries for literacy and religious education, and to encourage Americanization of the native population.

Digitizing these newspapers preserves the content but also provides a more readily accessible and searchable, fully indexed alternative to aging microfilm. Chronicling America is a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) / Library of Congress (LOC) project to digitize and provide free online access to historical English-language newspapers from across the United States.

The purpose of creating this book is to group some other major themes in Hawaii’s Digitized Newspapers.
