Ours is the age of contagious anxiety. We feel overwhelmed by the events around us, by injustice, by suffering, by an endless feeling of crisis. So, how can we nurture the parts of ourselves that hope, trust and believe in something better? And how can we stay sane in this age of division?
In this powerful, uplifting plea for conscious optimism, Booker Prize-nominated novelist and activist Elif Shafak draws on her own memories and delves into the power of stories to bring us together. In the process, she reveals how listening to each other can nurture democracy, empathy and our faith in a kinder and wiser future.

Just what I needed
This book has tackled (and spot on!) many of the emotions, impressions and experiences I had in the past couple of years. Some of these were and are hard to understand, let alone embrace. I was a young adult when Hungary (my native country) has been freed of communism - something we prayed for through my whole childhood. What’s happening for example in that country now can be understood easier if you consider the underlying powers so well explained by Ms Shafak. I truly enjoy her novels as well, but this book is quite exceptional by being a great help to understand somewhat our current situation and indeed try to stay sane in this world.
