At Mile 81 on the Maine Turnpike is a boarded up rest stop, a place where high school kids drink and get into the kind of trouble high school kids have always gotten into. It's the place where Pete Simmons goes when his older brother heads off to the gravel pit to play 'paratroopers over the side'.
Pete, armed with only the magnifying glass he got for his tenth birthday, finds a discarded bottle of vodka in the boarded up burger shack and drinks enough to pass out. That's why he doesn't notice a freshly mud-spattered station wagon (which is strange because there hadn't been any rain in New England for over a week) which veers into the Mile 81 rest area, ignoring the sign that reads 'closed, no services'.
The driver's door opens but nobody gets out . . .

Great storytelling
Not his best book ever, but the storytelling is terribly good.
Stephen King's mediocracy
Stephen King has proven that he is a great writer. Moreso, he has proven that he is a great writer even outside of the horror genre. In this story, he expertly creates characters with backstories that enrich and give motivation. He exhibits the power to create a world before your eyes.
But then, suddenly, a car starts eating people, and the power and structure of the story shakes on its vestiges. The horror element in this story feels quite forced, where the rest of the story, which revolves primarily around a set of interesting characters, is pretty engrossing and compelling. Bluntly said, it kinda ruins the whole thing.
It's a fun, interesting story, that much is true. Yet, more subtlety on the presentation of the horriffic part of the story would've certainly been a good thing.
