Juliana Horatia Ewing was a storyteller par excellence, showing an exquisite and careful attention to the details of family life, and a deep identification with her characters. Writing only for children and concentrating on the experiences of young people in the schoolroom, Ewing showed a natural sympathy and grace reminiscent of the great storyteller Hans Christian Andersen.
