Old Fire Eyes

"Old Fire Eyes" is an historically accurate, young adult adventure novel, which takes place in the year 1806. An apparent slave, Benjamin, must run for his life, carrying with him the burden of a promise made, along with the key to a secret strongbox. In the wilderness, he encounters John, a back-woods white boy traveling westward with his family and dog, Traveler. Together, the boys experience one rip-roaring adventure after another, learning to hunt, trap, fish, and gather to sustain their lives. The boys depend on each other as they encounter life-threatening dangers, strange characters, and laughable situations. Just when they believe the perils have passed, they must deal with the biggest threat, a rogue albino grizzly bear called "Fire Eyes" by their new Native American friends. The bear seems to have magical powers, but Benjamin discovers its secret, and the chase is on!
