Orphan Dinah

On the wild edge of Dartmoor, where Dart Vale shifts with light, weather, and season, Eden Phillpotts builds a rural world of grandeur, labor, and quiet suspense. Falcon Farm emerges from that landscape as a hard-won hillside holding, alive with horses, sheep, pigs, cows, and the daily pressures of weather and work. Here Joseph Stockman, a shrewd yet generous farmer, rules with practical wisdom, good humor, and a firm belief in fair food, flexible hours, and loyal service. Into his household come two very different men: the steady, literal Thomas Palk and the thoughtful, educated Lawrence Maynard. As farm life settles into its rhythms, deeper feelings stir beneath the surface. Susan watches the newcomers; John Bamsey brings news of marriage and change; and Dinah Waycott becomes the center of a growing emotional tension. Ben Bamsey sees her attachment to Maynard and fears what it may mean, while Maynard himself is shaken by an unexpected love that challenges his settled life and old vows. In this vivid tale of Dartmoor farming, Phillpotts blends landscape, domestic order, and the painful sweetness of love against the demands of duty.
