JUSTICE FREEMAN delivered the opinion of the court: Following a jury trial in the circuit court of Cook County, defendant, Chester Novak, was convicted of aggravated criminal
sexual assault. (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1989, ch. 38, par. 12-14(b)(1).) Defendant was sentenced to a prison term of 11 years, followed
by a mandatory supervised release period of three years. The appellate court affirmed. (242 Ill. App. 3d 836.) We allowed
