Three friends discover, surfing just got serious

Book three in the Bikini Collective series sees the girls preparing for another action-packed surfing adventure, but one of them is burdened with secrets. With all of her scholarship funds exhausted, Carolyn has no choice: she'll have to drop off the World Junior Tour. Just as all seems lost, the Bikini Collective – along with a mysterious donor – save the day. Next stop: Brazil! The lush South American tropics are dreamy; playful waves, everyday fiestas and beautiful, smooth-talking Brazilians. But can Carolyn find what it means to truly be happy? Just like a calm ocean with a deceiving undercurrent, things aren't always what they seem.

Surprises in Brazil.

Kate McMahon, ‘The Bikini Collective’.
Book 3: Sea of Gratitude.

As an ARC reader I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily promised an honest review. Here it is.

Rating: 4 (of 5 stars).

In general: Surprises in Brazil.

Main characters:
- Carolyn Fitzgerald.
Her single mom is an alcoholic, her dad left before she was born.
She lives in Australia and is a very talented junior surfer. Together with her two best friends they form the ‘Bikini Collective’, a collaboration group to promote female surfing in Australia and to attract sponsors. But at night she has to work in a surf shop to pay for her school and her hobby.

- Mel(issa) Appleby.
Mel is one of Carolyn’s best friends and a bit of ‘the wild one’ of the Bikini Collective. Sassy, self-confidence and not afraid to discover new experiences with boyfriends. She was the main character in book 2 of the Bikini Collective series.

- Jaspa Ryder.
Jaspa is the third member of the Collective and was the main character of book 1 in the series. She’s more quiet and thoughtful than Mel. And she’s the only one of the trio who has a permanent boyfriend. Her parents are her best supporters and help her (and her two best friends) to fulfill their surf ambitions.

In this third book of the ‘Bikini’ series, the author Kate Mc Mahon (an ex professional surfer) uses less technical surf jargon than in book 1 and writes more about Carolyn’s emotions; about how to handle her surfing uncertainties, family secrets, poverty and unexpected crushes.
I’m a person who never stood or sailed on a surf board, so I understood more of this book 3 than book 1. The author created some wonderful characters, interesting surf match scenes and gave with much feeling a description of a blossoming young love. For me the book was a pleasure to read.
