realistic characters and true emotions
I love how the author gives her characters something to overcome in this series. Quite often supernatural characters are overpowered and both mentally and physically extremely strong. In this series the supernatural creatures are dealing with very recognizable issues. It doesn't just make it easy to identify with them, it does also make their stories meaningful.
In this case both characters are grieving the loss of a loved one and it's clear the author channeled her own emotions into this novel. The emotions of these characters are raw and honest and I like how the author acknowledges that everyone deals with grief in a different way. She also shows us that not all those ways of dealing with grief are perfect.
I also like how the feelings of love develop in this book. It starts as an instant connection, it grows into a beautiful friendship and only then do they notice that they might want something more from each other. And of course, once more, the author does a great job having these characters communicate and seek help when needed.
I'm already looking forward to the next installment!
