Het sluiten van een hoofdstuk om een vers vervolg te maken
Het vorige boek van Steve Berry maakte mij minder gelukkig, maar ik ben blij dat de Charlemagne Pursuit dit herstelt heeft! Het was een mooi moment om het verhaal van zijn vader te horen. Dit begon ook gelijk goed door met deze geschiedenis af te trappen. Cotton Malone groeide vanaf zijn tiende op zonder vader, door dit verhaal krijgt zijn verhaal eindelijk een gezicht. Het emotioneerde mij een beetje toen hij voor zijn voorbeeld stond, ijskoud en bevroren geconserveerd om mee naar huis te komen. Dat maakte het verhaal voor Cotton af.
Dit boek verteld weer een scala aan historische feiten vermengt met de fictie van de schrijver. Hoewel ik de verhaallijnen soms moeilijk vind om te volgen, liep dit deze keer beter. Waarom een Amerikaanse admiraal het verhaal al die tijd bewaard heeft en nooit naar buiten heeft gebracht blijft een raadsel. Er was hier geen gewin. Ook het overlijden maakte dit verhaal niet echt af. Toch heb ik mij erg vermaakt na het lezen van dit boek. Het verhaal eindigt met een vraagteken, is er ooit een beschaving geweest die zeer ontwikkeld was en voor onze tijd van jagers- en verzamelaars leefde? We zullen het nooit weten en dat heeft dit verhaal niet in de weg gestaan. Knap geschreven.
In Aachen ziet Cotton een Nine Men's Morris speelbord op de troon van Charlemagne staan; een bordspel uit de Middeleeuwen. Ik moet zeggen dat dit een erg leuk spel is!
