In this version of The Hike, the sentence structure is more complex and the vocabulary is more challenging.

This story incorporates silent e words. The silent e syllable is a pattern that is typically taught in lower elementary and helps increase the type of words children can read. The silent e pattern has three features: it ends in an e that is silent, it has one vowel, and the e causes the vowel to say its long sound. Some examples include, hike, made, dune, and cake.
