THE LAST NEANDERTHAL

Two eras. One valley. The vanishing point of human history.

Deep in the frozen limestone cliffs of what will one day become Germany's Neander Valley, an ancient hunter lies dying. Broken by injury, ravaged by infection, and left completely isolated by the passing of his clan, he has nowhere left to run. As the biting prehistoric winter closes in, the sensory shock of his final hours triggers a flood of visceral memories—a lifetime defined by migration, tribal love, brutal encounters with a strange new species called Homo sapiens, and the slow, agonizing fade of his people.

Forty thousand years later, in 1856, quarry workers in the Feldhofer Cave unearth a bizarre, mineralized partial skeleton.

As the world's leading scholars scramble to decipher the bones, an intellectual war erupts. What was this creature? A deformed modern human, or an entirely distinct branch of humanity forgotten by time?

Alternating between the raw, intimate first-person perspective of the last European Neanderthal and the meticulous, high-stakes archaeological investigation that first defined Neanderthal 1 to science, The Last Neanderthal explores the profound boundary between what is lost to the earth and what can be recovered from the stone.

Perfect for readers of sweeping prehistory, dual-timeline historical fiction, and grounded scientific mysteries, this novel honors the real archaeological record while embracing the deep human drama of our lost cousins.
