Bobby Cannavale returns as Detective Bennett, slipping into his best Brooklyn accent and giving a hard edge to the character. As the kidnapper, John Glover employs a nasal whining tone perfectly suited to the character, and the phone conversations between cop and criminal are rich with tension. Orlagh Cassidy gives Emily an appealing gentleness, but her other female characters sound slightly clich d. A Little, Brown hardcover.

Aardig maar vooral gemakzuchtig.
Patterson poept boeken zoals een normaal mens naar het toilet gaat. Meestal zijn de boeken fijn leesvoer op een lange reis, soms stijgt er één boven het modale werk uit. Dit boek niet. Bennett is speciaal en een vondst van de schrijver, zijn gecompliceerde huishouden en verhouding tot de nanny, zijn 10 adoptiekinderen en de randfiguren als Seamus. Ditmaal is de plot wel heel vergezocht, de verhouding met de “ femme fatale “ wel heel voorspelbaar en al met al een fijn snel afgeraffeld verhaaltje wat halverwege de genoemde lange vlucht in de stoelzak vóór u mag achterblijven.
