Publisher Description

Abstract The pressure on psychotherapists to use "best practices" (BP) in treatment is increasing. The pressure has taken an ugly turn as some professionals urge stigmatizing practitioners who do not subscribe wholeheartedly to BP but insist on the value of artistry in psychotherapy. This paper suggests that the condemnation of the art side of the science/art debate mirrors the deterioration of civil discussion in politics and religion into "holy wars" over dogma. A case For better balance is made, based on the idea that aft and science can inform rather than compete with one another. Art's contribution has to do with respect For and utilization of the interior resources of both client and therapist. The extremists on the side of BP, however, have the currents of the increasingly polarized culture behind them, so the outlook for valuing art in psychotherapy is not good.
