Critics go to hell probably

Ten years ago, art students Gabrielle de la Puente and Zarina Muhammad started a website, posting irreverent reviews of exhibitions every Sunday under the playful moniker ‘The White Pube’. The duo emphasized the emotional and physical experience of seeing art over the cold analysis typical of print media reviews. Written in textspeak and adorned with emojis, their online aesthetic, real-world critique and vulnerable personal narrative attracted a cult following and soon encompassed everything from literature and gaming to politics and society.

In Critics Go to Hell Probably, Gabrielle and Zarina bring together their spiciest and most enduring Sunday texts – including an infamous Dishoom review, a contemplation on the politics of diasporic art, a moving essay on chronic illness through a Beat Saber video game review and everything in between.

Through these articles, Gabrielle and Zarina ask profound questions about what it means to be an artist in this day and age, the problems with the UK’s cultural institutions, how culture helps us make sense of ourselves and, of course, whether they are going to hell for being critics (probably).
