This is a professional text designed for intermediate grade educators focusing on how to use read aloud texts and independent reading to strengthen children's comprehension. High-quality literature read aloud and independent reading offer children access to important ideas, rich vocabulary, and the opportunity to actively problem solve and discuss emerging understandings with peers and their teacher. In this text, two read aloud units of study designed for use with third grade children are featured. Unit 1 is "Building, Engineering and Designing." Unit 2 is "Traditional Stories and Myths." For each read aloud text there are comprehension engagements and text-dependent questions that are aligned to the CCSS, as well as a bibliography of independent texts. Additional chapters focus on the teacher's role during independent reading and how to teach synthesis.
