Discussion of the impact of poverty on school age children and youth occurs frequently in courses on multicultural education because it crosses ethnic and geographic boundaries. This article highlights the experiences of students in a teacher education program who learned about the impact of having little money to spend on school supplies. It features their empathy with children and youth who come from families earning low wages. The following questions were addressed during this project: How do children and parents feel when they do not have enough money to buy required school supplies? How do cheaper supplies from a budget store affect the quality of school work? How does a lack of supplies affect the child's self-concept?
