"What makes you different makes you dangerous."

Divergent really entertained me. The story tore me into a possibly, bleak future. A post-apocalyptic world marked by war.

In an attempt to prevent another war from occurring, society is controlled by being divided into five factions;
- Candor (the honest)
- Abnegation (the selfless)
- Dauntless (the brave)
- Amity (the peaceful)
- Erudite (the intelligent)

What exactly is a Divergent? - and why is the system so afraid of them?

The protagonists is Tris: I like her transformation. From trying to fit into the faction Abnegation with rigid living rules she has never really felt comfortable with, to living and experiencing belonging in a tough, hard world in the Dauntless-faction. where she slowly, but surely, realizes that she is so much braver and stronger than she thought.

From weak and submissive, to reckless and independent. She’s never been that selfless Abnegation-girl she grew up like. Actually, the system cannot control her mind like they do with the others. She’s a Divergent, which is extremely dangerous in this post-apocalyptical world. There’s some kind of witch hunt on those who are Divergent - they must be killed.

"What makes you different makes you dangerous."

The factions aren’t really about trying to decide how people should behave, nor are they trying to control people's thoughts so they aren’t a threat to the system. It allows someone to put themselves in the role of ruler and rule the system as they like.

Divergent is as much about affiliation and unity as division and exclusion. It’s us and them It’s about being different, and how people get frightened by you because of it.

Although there are many hints in the book that shows how brave and badass Tris actually is. Frustration lies and trembles at the bottom of all her emotions, she hates how the system controls and split the society. How her life is determinded by others and she gets punished for being herself. There are a lot of unresolved emotions in Tris, which makes it interesting following her. And with the relation she gets with Four, her instructor in the faction Dauntless, I really got the cherry on the cake - some kind of an enemies-to-lovers affair - which I simply love reading about in YA novels!

Divergent did what I expected from a dystopian novel - it shows the consequences of division and fear of the unknown. And it addressed the issue of whether there is a conclusion on how a society should live to avoid war. And it proves what has always been clear; People are afraid of anyone who isn’t like them. Sadly, some passages in the became a bit protracted so I lost my concentration and got a little bored - otherwise Divergent would have gotten 5 stars from me.
