“The truth is there’s no such thing as a normal life. There’s just the time you get and how you spend it.”
In the summer of 2000, AJ Graves dreams of writing for Saturday Night Live; instead, she’s stuck working in a video rental store, with slim odds of escaping her small Massachusetts town. Then in walks Noah Drew, the enigmatic and intense scion of the Drew acting dynasty, and her life changes forever. Despite wildly different upbringings, the two forge a deep, cosmic bond, first as friends, then as acting partners—until one day, Noah disappears without a word.
Seven years later, in New York City, AJ is shocked to find herself cast in the same intergalactic TV production as Noah, by then a well-known Hollywood heartthrob. As their on-screen characters grow closer every day, the lines between reality and acting begin to blur. Unable to stay away from each other, AJ and Noah are forced to confront the truth of what happened years ago—and the devastating secret that will send their lives careening apart, even as fate continues to draw them together.
Blending unforgettable characters, explosive chemistry and yearning, and profound emotion, Into the Blue is a journey unlike any other—one that asks: What does it mean to diverge from the script to forge your own story?
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
The spark that brings two people together refuses to go out in this heartfelt story of love, growth, and creativity. In 2000, teenage AJ is feeling stifled by small-town Massachusetts life when she meets the magnetic Noah. They spend a magical summer together studying improv with Noah’s aunt (who starred in the cult sci-fi TV series AJ is obsessed with) while falling hopelessly in love. So the pain is excruciating when, out of nowhere, Noah vanishes from her life. The cosmic connection AJ and Noah experience on stage and off is ecstatic, but we love how their summer together also pushes AJ to pursue a future as an artist. And a lot of growth happens in the years she and Noah spend apart. When they finally reconnect—on Broadway, on the set of SNL, and even on a reboot of that TV series—we needed plenty of tissues on hand. This rich, complex love story breaks your heart in the best possible way.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Brodie (Songs in Ursa Major) spins a beautiful tale of star-crossed lovers. In 2000 Massachusetts, aspiring TV writer AJ Graves, 17, escapes from her stultifying home life by watching episodes of the 1960s cult classic science fiction show Astronauticals at the video store where she works. The show's costar Eudora Drew hails from her town, and her world begins to change when Eudora's nephew, Noah Drew, a student at West Point, begins working in the store. Noah, who was four years ahead of AJ in school, has come home to take care of his sick mother. Despite his family's legacy, Noah believes "Hollywood is soulless," and he has no desire to act. But Eudora sees potential in both AJ and Noah, and after the pair take acting lessons with her, they wind up kissing. Then Noah suddenly skips town. Flash forward to 2007, when AJ is cast in an unscripted Astronauticals prequel with Noah, now a famous actor. While AJ and Noah demonstrate their undeniable chemistry on and off the screen, Noah reveals a devastating secret that explains why he left seven years earlier. As AJ finally finds the success she'd dreamed of, she weighs the burden of Noah's secret against her desire to be with him, and the tender story builds to a poignant twist. Fans of Taylor Jenkins Reid will not want to miss this tearjerker.
