Corsica is an island in the Mediterranean Sea that belongs to France. It is located west of the Italian Peninsula, southeast of the French mainland and north of Sardinia. More specifically, it is located “54 miles W. from Leghorn, 98 m. S. from Genoa, and 106 m. S.E. from Nice. It is 116 m. long, 52 m. broad, and contains an area of 3376 square miles; divided into 5 arrondissements, subdivided into 62 cantons, and these again into 363 communes, with a population of 275,000.”

 It is the fourth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, after Icily, Sardinia and Cyprus.

The origins of Corsica can be tracked back for about 250 million years.
