Tarah DeWitt does a fantastic job crafting her characters and the complicated feelings guiding them. She’s especially gifted at portraying grief in all its messy, realistic forms, like when Bea finds herself experiencing random flashes of anger. We loved watching Bea grow closer and closer to Silas, who understands her journey deeply thanks to his own traumas. You don’t need to read the earlier books in DeWitt’s Spunes series to enjoy this story of sorrow, catharsis, and hope.
