Publisher Description

Methods of Bible Study offers the reader several techniques to read, understand and take to heart the many lessons, doctrines and stories of the Holy Bible.

W. H. Griffith Thomas wrote this encompassing and thorough account of the Biblical lore at the turn of the 20th century. Already an experienced pastor of many years standing, Thomas had devised his own practical but effective methods of studying the Old and New Testaments which helped both his preaching and his personal connection to God.

Each chapter concerns a specific part of the Bible, identifying how each is unique in terms of topic and tone. The author is careful to distinguish between books which are primarily concerned with storytelling (such as Exodus, Genesis , Kings, and the New Testament Gospels) those which are poetic (Psalms, Song of Solomon) or prophetic (Revelation, Daniel).

Thomas compares the texts of the Old Testament with the New and catalogs their differences. Through these close readings of the text, we learn how to effectively understand the message, lessons and events contained in each book. Although Thomas applies aspects of literary analysis to his study, in his exegesis he is careful not to lose sight of the essential meaning: this being of the greatest importance over and above the manner of expression.

In all, Methods of Bible Study offers a competent program for study of the Bible that is inclusive and useful for the Christian laity, scholars, and preachers. The author makes clear that anyone committed to God, and able to devote effort to their scriptural study, can attain a reasonable level of understanding.
