Philip Reeve have done a great job with this book, the first of four books in his Mortal Engines Quartet. He first introduces Tom, one of the protagonists, and we get to know him better throughout the book. The plot takes place millennia in the future, on a rough and desolate earth, ravaged by war and climatechange. To stay alive, great cities have been set on wheels and are now rolling on the dry seabed, hunting smaller cities and towns. Tom is an orphan teen, and a member of the Gulid of Historians in London. He is working in the museum, and often daydreaming, when he feels London moving in a way that could only mean one thing. The first hunt in a long, long time. He asks his supervisor to be allowed a break to watch the chase in person. He is first denied, but after his executive leaves, he sneaks out to see. Eventually, he gets caught and is sent on duty in the engine rooms, and by the end of the day, his world is turned upside down.
Reeve writes in a very chatching way, and it gets really thrilling at the end. You get involved with the characters.
