'A package of dynamite' Stephen King

‘Powerful, compulsive, brilliant’ Marian Keyes

An era-defining novel about the relationship between a fifteen-year-old girl and her teacher

ALL HE DID WAS FALL IN LOVE WITH ME AND THE WORLD TURNED HIM INTO A MONSTER

Vanessa Wye was fifteen-years-old when she first had sex with her English teacher.

She is now thirty-two and in the storm of allegations against powerful men in 2017, the teacher, Jacob Strane, has just been accused of sexual abuse by another former student.

Vanessa is horrified by this news, because she is quite certain that the relationship she had with Strane wasn't abuse. It was love. She's sure of that.

Forced to rethink her past, to revisit everything that happened, Vanessa has to redefine the great love story of her life – her great sexual awakening – as rape. Now she must deal with the possibility that she might be a victim, and just one of many.

Nuanced, uncomfortable, bold and powerful, My Dark Vanessa goes straight to the heart of some of the most complex issues of our age.

Mariiiiiiiee ,

Dark, disturbing, disgusting,

I usually prefer books with a dark story - but I have to admit that this one got almost a little too dark even for me! In fact, reading some paragraphs made me physically nauseous! At some points I got so frustrated that I almost throw the book into the wall!

Vanessa is fifteen years old when she is manipulated and sexually abused by her much older English teacher - he is charismatic, sociopathic and uses ruling techniques to angle the relationship to seem like Vanessa wants it. Angles the situations to be that Vanessa’s in charge, that she has all the power over him - he's just a poor forty-four years old man who made the mistake of falling in love with her, a fifteen year old girl.

But some years later other women starts coming out and say they have been sexually abused by the same teacher. This forces Vanessa to look at her past with new eyes. Was she also abused? Was that what happened? To be able to live with herself, Vanessa insists that her relationship with him was a real love story - she refuses to be a victim. She's not like the other women. Her story is different, it was real.

The book is dark, disturbing, disgusting, tears you through an emotional spectrum of frustration and anger. It’s so realistic and complex - very uncomfortable to read. But it's a very engaging and provocative story - so well written! - (why haven't I read this book way sooner?!)

The thought of how many women who experience / have experienced similar stories as Vanessa, makes my heart bleed.

Books like this really remind me of why I read at all: it challenges the way I think, and changes my view of the world - This is a book I never forget.
