Publisher Description

The prequel novel to the globally bestselling Wheel of Time series - a fantasy phenomenon

The city of Canluum lies close to the scarred and desolate wastes of the Blight, a walled haven from the dangers away to the north, and a refuge from the ill works of those who serve the Dark One. Or so it is said. The city that greets Al'Lan Mandragoran, exiled king of Malkier and the finest swordsman of his generation, is instead one that is rife with rumour and the whisperings of Shadowspawn. Proof, should he have required it, that the Dark One grows powerful once more and that his minions are at work throughout the lands.

And yet it is within Canluum's walls that Lan will meet a woman who will shape his destiny. Moiraine is a young and powerful Aes Sedai who has journeyed to the city in search of a bondsman. She requires aid in a desperate quest to prove the truth of a vague and largely discredited prophecy - one that speaks of a means to turn back the shadow, and of a child who may be the dragon reborn.

5 🌟—Because who doesn’t want more Moiraine and Lan?

So, if Robert Jordan decided to write a 600-page book about Moiraine and Lan just sitting in a room, drinking tea in complete silence, I’d still read it. Happily. But New Spring gives us so much more than that—it’s their origin story, their first meeting, their first steps toward becoming the legendary duo we know and love. And let me tell you, it’s absolutely worth every page.

Moiraine is as sharp and composed as ever, already mastering the art of making people feel like clueless toddlers with a single look. Lan is… well, Lan. Stoic, brooding, allergic to emotions, and generally acting like he was personally assigned the job of shouldering the world’s problems. Watching these two navigate their initial partnership is both hilarious and deeply satisfying—she’s all cool calculation, he’s a walking battle strategy, and somehow it just works.

The pacing is different from the main series—less apocalyptic chaos, more political maneuvering and character development—but that’s exactly why I loved it. It’s like getting VIP access to the behind-the-scenes footage of The Wheel of Time, and I ate up every second of it. If you love these characters, this book is an absolute treat. Five stars, no question.
