Ride Upon the Storm

When soldiers are sent to a remote coastguard station on the Norfolk coast at the outbreak of World War I, they find themselves billeted with the families of the men they have replaced. In a cruel twist of fate, most of those men, who had been assigned to ships of the Royal Navy Reserve, are killed in the first months of the war. By the time the soldiers are posted away, most of the wives are widows and the children orphans. For one soldier, Tovell, the previous few months have been life-changing...for the first time he has savoured family life. Turning his back on his former drunken and aimless existence, he now sees a purpose to his life: to get back to the 'family' he has left on the Norfolk coast.This is a tale of contrasts...comic incidents and tragic events, battles with the sea at home and with the enemy abroad, gentle affection and passionate devotion...all told against the backdrop of actual events that affected the lives of people living in Norfolk and Suffolk during the Great War.
