Publisher Description

Abstract: Sets out the views first of Henry Carey and then of Karl Marx on the significance of resource scarcity for the economic development of advanced capitalist societies. Concludes that both emphasised reproduction costs, pointing the way to an economic theory consistent with environmental sustainability. Carey, however, stressed material flows, while Marx paid more attention to the role of social relations in the efficient use of natural resources. Introduction
