The Cosmic Express

In The Cosmic Express, Jack Williamson imagines a dazzling future that feels less like progress than a beautiful trap. Eric Stokes-Harding lives in 2432 A.D. in a vast, climate-controlled New York sealed beneath a glass roof, where luxury, technology, and comfort have made life strangely stale. A fashionable novelist, he earns his fame writing thrilling tales of ape-men, cowboys, and castaways—hardy figures who flourish in danger, simplicity, and the open world his readers yearn to escape into. Eric's own dissatisfaction mirrors the irony at the heart of the story: he profits from glorifying primitive adventure while chafing against the safety of civilization. His wife, Nada, shares his longing for nature and a less artificial existence, and their conversations turn toward Venus as a possible refuge. Imagining that distant world as young, wild, and untouched, they set the stage for a science-fiction adventure that blends satire, nostalgia, and the seductive pull of the untamed.
