The Foreign Hand Tie

Raphael Poe is no ordinary spy: alone in a tiny one-man underwater craft, he slips out of Istanbul, crosses the Black Sea and the Dnieper by night, and even continues on foot when the route demands it, while his robot-brained vehicle obediently turns itself back toward Turkey. His covert arrival in Moscow under another identity is only the beginning of a mission that turns espionage into something almost magical, where thought travels farther than radio and one man can do the work of an entire ring. Operation Mapcase, a top-secret American intelligence project known fully only to the President, the Secretary of Defense, and Colonel Spaulding, depends on Raphael's uncanny telepathic link with his brother Lenny, who serves as the human relay. A live test in Moscow proves the gift real when Lenny sketches a stranger by lamppost with astonishing accuracy, confirming the identity of Bill Donovan and convincing the President to proceed. But the program is fragile: in Washington, Soviet technical drawings arrive garbled, translations fail, and Spaulding discovers that language, belief, and clear thinking may be the most dangerous obstacles of all.
