Book 7 (2026)

On the back of ‘Eldest’ we ride into the wind with ‘Brisingr’ or ‘the Seven Promises of Eragon Shadeslayer and Saphira Bjartskular’ - the follow up in Christopher Paolini’s ‘The Inheritance Cycle’, and the third outing for Eragon and his dragon Saphira in this tale of good vs evil.

Originally planned as a trilogy by Christopher Paolini, and then expanded upon to include a fourth book thanks to its size, ‘Brisingr’ delivers yet another heavy exposition read from page one until its concluding chapters.

Eragon and his dragon Saphira are still enemies to King Galbatroix, our mysterious figure who continues to sit on his throne in a kingdom we have not yet visited, while letting others do his bidding, as alliances continue to be built and strengthened between the free peoples of Alagaësia.

‘Brisingr’ is, in this part of the tale, the forgotten middle-child-of-actual-plot. Christoper Paolini gave us his all to descriptions, sprinkling words on the page by expanding upon everything Eragon felt, smelt, touched, saw, or experienced as he analysed his way across Alagaësia to minimal effect.

In this tale, Eragon begins to whine often about his circumstances in which he finds himself, and in turn, reflected my own exhaustion of reading or listening to him. From my own perspective, he is the weaker POV Christoper Paolini offers us this time around.

Although the last 10% of the book we gained momentum, it did feel as though it was a little too late to redeem a tale with too many words and very little to say.

A 2 ✨ slow riddled exposition read for this cycle. 🫑
