Two decades after a flu pandemic topples modern civilisation in the space of a fortnight, a roving troupe of performers are intent on preserving the arts. Yet they encounter a fresh existential threat upon reaching a settlement near the Great Lakes. Emily St. John Mandel’s 2014 novel won the Arthur C. Clarke Award, which is no surprise given its sci-fi pedigree, but it’s also a layered work of literary fiction. And of course, Station Eleven predated our own world-changing pandemic by several years. Lucy Boynton (of Bohemian Rhapsody fame) narrates this audiobook with close attention to detail, bringing out the nuance in every story beat and character interaction as the novel’s self-styled Traveling Symphony set out to foster the humanity in a dystopian scenario.
