With Boyd convalescing at home after his operation, and DS Minter preparing for his Inspector's exam, CID Hastings is woefully under-manned.

So, when the body of a young man is found hanging from a tree - an apparent suicide, and a house is burned down killing a wheelchair-bound old woman, it's down to DC Okeke to handle the two cases. However, as she digs into both it soon becomes apparent that they are connected to a third death, the eldest resident of an old people's home.

As she peels the layers back and reveals the truth behind these deaths, little does she realise she's in danger of kicking a hornet's nest that has lain dormant for over sixty years.
