We return to Prythian in ‘A Court of Mist and Fury’, the sequel in Sarah J. Maas’s ACOTAR series, as we step again into Freyre’s boots, picking up a few weeks later after the events of the previous story.
This time around, our novel is split into three parts, ‘House of Beasts’, ‘House of Wind’, and ‘House of Mist’. Without going into detail about the different “Houses” or what they represent, I’d say this - I enjoyed ‘Beast’ and ‘Mist’, while ‘Wind’ was long and dragged during chapters of internal monologue. Maybe I’m building my resilience to the romantasy genre, I’m not exactly sure, but whatever it was, I began to appreciate book one more with a new perspective.
In our story, Freyre is managing or rather mismanaging her PTSD with no help from Tamlin, High Lord of the Spring Court, and this plays quite a lot in the book - now enter Rhysand, High Lord of the Night Court - throw in some magic and picturesque snowy mountains with twinkling stars across a black velvet sky and we have our new protagonist.
Our unlikely duo begin the hunt for an item that may just help them with the threat from the King of Hybern. In this new chapter, Freyre will see and experience more of Pythian, participant in magical fights (when they occur) and interact with characters as the plot moves towards its conclusion, setting up book three.
Those ending chapters left me wondering how will our MFC and MMC get through this as revelation after revelation came tumbling down like a wall of bricks, cascading across the marble floor, only to still at their feet.
Sarah J. Maas hasn’t finished this series quite yet, with updates that she’s currently working on the next ACOTAR novel. Where this series goes next, I don’t know, however I am still in for the ride. At this point, yes.
