Captured and tortured in Afghanistan before escaping, Jacob Day returns to Maine where his nightmares and paranoia make him feel unfit for human company. Though well-educated, he takes up the trade of lobster fishing and lives on a deserted island the locals call No Hope, the perfect place for him.

Diana Mayfield, granddaughter of a wealthy senator who kept her on too short a leash, took off for Europe and creates one scandal after another.  Coming to her senses, she tries to hide from the paparazzi at the family summer house in Maine, but is still pursued. She wants to build a haven on No Hope and live in solitude.
