Aladdin O’Brien

Aladdin O’Brien is certain he can row; the river has other ideas. By the time Margaret asks if they can get back, the shipyards are already slipping from sight.

On a clear autumn Sunday, the two children set out from the float for a forbidden boat ride—and are swept past the working riverfront toward woods and an island beyond help. Aladdin’s bravado gives way to guilt as he struggles against the tide; Margaret, in her best white dress, imagines the punishments waiting at home and beyond. Their predicament is perilous, but Morris tells it with a mischievous tenderness, catching the solemn fears and fierce loyalties of childhood. With the current carrying them farther from shore, what will the children find on the island—and how will they face the journey home?
