The next person by is Arianna. Arianna tells me, “I have been looking for another job, for several weeks. I can find nothing, not even interviews. I have been living in an apartment, with Myrna. Well, Myra moved out. There is no way that I can pay the rent, on what they pay me here. There is no way that I can survive for very long on unemployment. What do I do, become homeless?”
(I can see that Arianna is terrified.) I tell the girl, “They tell me that you took French in high school.”
Arianna swallows and blurts out, “I can’t really speak French, just useless high school French.”
I lecture, “I have a temp job lined up. The customer wants me to integrate some French developed code into an application that I just delivered. There are variables in the French developed code, the variables have French names. If I can get an American translation, it will help me understand the code. You can look up a French variable name, in a dictionary. Then, while I translate the one variable name to American, you look up the next variable name. So far, so good?”
Arianna thinks for a few moments and then asks, “How long will that job last?”
I lecture, “There are also French comments in the code. The comments describe what happens with the variables. You have a running start to translate the simple French sentences, using a dictionary.”
Arianna thinks for a few moments and then asks, “Where is this leading?”
I lecture, “There are other, simple tasks that need doing. A company will not hire someone to do a simple little task but you are already there and can do what’s needed. While you do the work, you get paid the standard hourly rate for a temp, 150% of the employee rate. Yiu also get more items for your resume.”
Arianna snarls, “Where and how do I live, while I work as a temp?”
I answer, “Arianna, you move in with me.”
Arianna sobs, “Jim, you want me for your slave.”
I lecture, “Arianna, I train you to earn a decent living. I enter you into situations where you regularly deal with those who have good, professional level jobs to offer. I enable you to get crummy little jobs, to demonstrate that you are reliable. Else, you work the streets. Which is better?”
(I want to sink into the earth and die. That’s not going to happen and my only real choice is to be Jim’s slave.) I tell Jim, “I have been abused. If you abuse me and discard me, I’ll die!”
I lecture, “If I just wanted a sex partner, I could maybe recruit Jane, who could work as a nudie dancer, down at Nude Nanci’s. I could maybe recruit Nanci, who could also work as a nudie dancer, down at Nude Nanci’s. Arianna has the ability to be much more than a nudie dancer, down at Nude Nanci’s.”
A completely defeated Arianna sobs, “The only other offer that I have is to screw Ricky.”
I say, “Arianna, I will take care of you. The likes of Ricky or Nude Nanci will not.”
(Arianna then gets called into Personnel.)
I take Arianna by the hand and tell her, “Arianna, I will take care of you. Wait for me when you get signed out.”
Arianna nods yes and then trudges off on what she fears is her last mile.
Not too much later, I get called into Personnel.
(Most of us, who work for the company have government security clearances. Getting laid off from a government security clearance job, involves a lot of paper work. There are several people filling out the necessary forms. One of the people filing out forms is Ronny, my ex Project Manager. They don’t normally lay off Project Managers. A Manager is instead allowed to resign, which looks better in a resume. However, resigning can make it more difficult to get unemployment. It appears that Ronny really needs the unemployment check.)
There are a few Personnel girls who furnish what assistance they can, to the laid off.
I get my forms filled out, then I have to wait while the Personnel girls check out the forms of others. Finally my turn comes and I get my forms okayed and I also get my final check.
