Publisher Description
New York Times bestselling author Carolyn Brown introduces readers to the world of Burnt Boot, Texas, in this beloved holiday cowboy romance.
All he wants for Christmas is peace and quiet…
After two tours in Afghanistan, retired Army sniper Finn O'Donnell believes his new ranch outside the sleepy little town of Burnt Boot, Texas, is the perfect place for an undisturbed holiday season. But before this brave cowboy can settle in, an old friend shows up looking for protection and a place where nobody knows her name.
But that's going to take a miracle…
Callie Brewster is a lady in distress who must relocate to protect her young nephew, Martin, and the only person she trusts is her old Army friend, Finn. Burnt Boot seems like the perfect place to be anonymous, but it turns out a small town with big drama is no place to hide…

PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Brown starts the Burnt Boot series with a sketched-out story populated by too many characters. Finn O'Donnell, the new owner of Salt Draw Ranch, thinks he wants peace and quiet. But his intentions are turned upside down by the arrival of Callie Brewster, a former soldier he knows from his days as an Army sniper. Callie brings along her nephew, Martin, to hide out with Finn instead of entering him into a witness protection program. The details of Martin's need for protection are thin and the resolution to that plot point is barely tacked on at the end. A local family feud waxes and wanes, and numerous characters appear and disappear without much effect on the story. Even the development of intimacy between the principles is skipped over quickly. Brown has shown herself capable of better, but this novel is hollow through and through.
