A look inside
“My father once made us," she began, "keep a diary, in two columns; on one side we were to put down in the morning what we thought would be the course and events of the coming day, and at night we were to put down on the other side what really had happened. It would be to some people rather a sad way of telling their lives," (a tear dropped upon my hand at these words) - "I don't mean that mine has been sad, only so very different to what I expected.”
Description
Cranford is a satirical picture of small-town life in early-Victorian England. The story is portrayed through the eyes of Mary Smith, a young lady who watches the amusing challenges of two middle-aged sisters as they attempt to maintain a level of refined dignity in the midst of poverty. Cranford is a well-known novel by Elizabeth Gaskell, an English writer of the nineteenth century. It was first published in eight portions in the journal Household Words, edited by Charles Dickens, between December 1851 and May 1853. It was then published as a book in 1853, with minor changes. In the years following Elizabeth Gaskell's death, the work became exceedingly well-known.
