There are lots of great gay coming-of-age stories, but Drag Teen—the YA debut of Internet star Jeffery Self—is something new: the story of a drag queen coming out. We were immediately rooting for insecure teen JT, whose path out of his unfabulous Florida hometown will involve locating the drag confidence within. Self’s pop culture references are priceless: a small-town southern gay bar is named after a Designing Women character; a Florida hot dog stand offers a “Brittany Snow” coleslaw special. But it’s the timeless themes of empowerment and self-actualization that make this fantastic, funny novel a must-read.
