Gala-Days

Gail Hamilton’s journey begins with a trunk crashing down the stairs and a companion arriving just in time to offer advice. She has a book of travels in mind—but first, she insists, she needs adventures of her own.

At home, with June still nowhere to be seen, Hamilton’s spirited narrator debates Halicarnassus about what makes travel worth reading: not the scenery alone, but the traveler’s own scrapes, enthusiasms, and opinions. Her experience so far amounts to a huckleberry outing and a ride around an orchard in a leaky pig’s-trough, hardly enough for the book she longs to write. So she packs her trunk and waits for summer to set them on their way, determined to turn personal adventure into literature. But what will happen when her plans meet the world beyond the attic stairs?
