Publisher Description

Their timber and corrugated home was patched and much weather-beaten. The farm situated far from any big town had no power or water. The water supply, an old deep well, wearing badly around the ledges, was several yards past the house and almost dry.
Although, poor as Jasons family were, they were rich in their love for each other.
For many months Jason, his mother and grandfather toiled the hard clay soil. The non-existence of heavy rain for many months made it a hardship on their efforts to grow their few seeds Jason, his mother Jenny and his grandfather never complained about the long hard hours they had to toil. The frail looking Jenny toiling just as hard as any man did.
Carmell, Jainette and baby Ruthy played noisy and happily around the porch steps, were
ignorant of the problem facing the Adults. Carmell being the eldest, watched after her
sisters. Over several weeks, the strong vegetables were almost ready to harvest. There
would be enough for a few weeks for the family and enough to sell at the market. Jennys
father confided happily to her, The Lad and Lassies, they be getting a present on the
morrow. That will be a lovely surprise for the wee Bains, Pappa.
Midday of the same morning distant dust clouds were seen along the dirt track. The old man knowing what the dust meant, called to Jason, Hurry Laddie! Take your sisters into the cellar! Jason knowing not to question his grandfather obeyed him. Racing toward the porch, Jenny racing behind Jason, she continued inside to fetch her fathers rifle and bullets. The rebel group having destroyed the vegetable patches left the land taking most of Jennys meagre food supply It was three weeks following that fateful day that was to change Jason and Ruthys lives. It is Jasons drawing talent that gives them the small amount for food. The stranger,Martha who befriended Jason in Cuba, wrote asking him to work for her in Australia. Knowing Jason to be independent, Bertha assured him that her offer was not charity and Jason accepts. AND SO Jason and Ruthys life in Australia began.
Life had been normal for the siblings until Jason retured to Cuba to collect the key to his mothers Jewellery box.
